People Are Humping Trees to Save the Planet

No, I’m not joking — although I wish I was.

There are a group of human beings known as “ecosexuals” who claim “to make love with the earth. ”

Their purpose? According to their manifesto, to stop the “rape, abuse and the poisoning of the earth.” The group says they shamelessly hug trees, massage the earth with their feet, and talk erotically to plants. They also claim to caress rocks and “be pleasured by waterfalls.”

If you’re curious as to who these people are (and perhaps, where they’ve come from), you’ll be amused to notice that virtually all of them appear to be White American. Of course, it may come as no surprise that there is one person of color whose short biography states she’s a performing artist.

I guess earth isn’t attracted to Black people.

Anyway, you may be reluctantly wondering how these people engage in such acts. Ecosexuality supporter and University of Nevada, Las Vegas faculty member Amanda Morgan, explains that ecosexuality encompasses people who try to use sustainable sex products, or who enjoy skinny dipping and naked hiking. However, on the other end are “people who roll around in the dirt having an orgasm covered in potting soil,” she said. “There are people who fuck trees, or masturbate under a waterfall.”

Lesbian couple Annie Sprinkle and Elizabeth Stephens have spearheaded a movement to bring ecosexuality to the forefront of human behavior.

They’ve produced several films about ecosexuality, including a documentary, that depicts their “pollen-amorous” (a play on the word “polyamorous”) relationship with the Appalachian Mountains. They’ve also officiated wedding ceremonies where they and fellow ecosexuals marry the earth, the moon, and other natural entities. There are believed to be 100,000 ecosexuals in the world.

Of the many embarrassing thoughts floating around my head, the main one that keeps surfacing is “Has nature consented to sex?” I mean, how does a tree feel about being groped, rubbed, and thrusted by a human being? Strange.
